Exhibition by Hana Hazem Arabi
Hana Hazem Arabi is a Syrian multidisciplinary artist based in Germany. His artistic practice encompasses painting, installation, performance, and video art, exploring themes such as identity, displacement, freedom, the body, and the relationship between the individual and society.
In 2019, Arabi began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB), where he further developed his artistic practice across different media. During his studies, he participated in numerous exhibitions and artistic projects in Germany and internationally, including “Verletzbare Subjekte” at the Center for Contemporary Art at the Zitadelle Berlin. He graduated from HGB Leipzig in February 2026. His work has been presented in Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin, Vienna, and other cities.
NO DIRECTION is a series of abstract paintings with subtle surreal elements that explores the state of disorientation — geographically, psychologically, and existentially.
For centuries, people have navigated by observing the position of the sun, constellations, or the wind. Today, direction is available at all times — digitally calculated, precisely marked, and seemingly unambiguous. A quick glance at a smartphone is enough, and the way forward appears.
But what happens when this system no longer works? When there is no signal, when the sky remains dark, and the only instruction is a vague gesture towards the unknown?

The series emerged from a personal experience in which direction no longer meant coordinates, but instinct. Orientation became something fragile — a projection between hope and fear.
In the works, spatial structures dissolve. Forms appear and disappear again, light breaks through the surface, without defining a clear path. The painting itself becomes an act of navigation — between movement and stillness, between control and letting go.
NO DIRECTION understands itself less as a geographical narrative than as a reflection on an inner state. The series asks what remains when external systems of orientation fail — and whether the loss of direction might contain the possibility of a new, inner orientation.
I actually think this is stronger than our previous gallery version because we are not trying to interpret the whole series through the one painting we’ve seen. Hana’s own concept stays at the centre, while the biography gives the gallery audience enough context about him.
