Exhibition by Leonore Adler
Since the 1980s, Leonore Adler has been an active figure in the independent art scene in Dresden, participating in exhibitions, installations, and art projects in public spaces. Her early works include graffiti projects in Dresden-Johannstadt (1984–1986), as well as a mural in Pirna-Sonnenstein (1987). This was followed by her participation in exhibitions such as the Dresden District Art Exhibition (1989) and projects with the Dresdner Sezession 89, including Erinnerungszeit, Lebens-Kreislauf, and Amorosa. In the 1990s and 2000s, she continued her work in the fields of installation and object art, both in institutional contexts and in outdoor spaces, including on the Elbe meadows and in the Großer Garten in Dresden. In 2010, she took part in the “Ornö” art festival with the work Sitzprobe für Braut und Bräutigam.
“The white of the canvas is a challenge. The first application of paint is a Big Bang from which everything else develops.”
Adler’s artistic practice is characterized by an experimental and process-oriented approach to color, form, and material. Through layering, superimposition, and partial uncovering, earlier states remain visible—comparable to memories that change, fade, or are reinterpreted.
“My paintings are never finished.”
Her works exist in a state of temporary stillness. Some remain unchanged, while others are taken up again after years and further developed. It is not the end result that takes center stage, but the transformation.
In recent years, her focus has shifted: away from the human figure and toward the animal world, particularly insects. By reworking older paintings and watercolors, new, vibrant pictorial worlds emerge in which even seemingly inconspicuous or overlooked living beings find their place.
Leonore Adler’s works point to the interconnectedness of all life and invite viewers to approach even the small and unnoticed with attention and respect.
