Stefan Nestler, born 1962 in Freiberg, combines in his works a variety of influences from constructivist and concrete art movements. His work is characterised by a pronounced sense of pictorial order, in which chaotic, amorphous elements of reality are transformed into structured, rhythmic compositions. This ‘lawfulness of the series’, as it can be found in his works, transforms the original purpose of things and elevates them to a higher pictorial context. What appears fleeting and transient in the world is permanently fixed in Nestler’s work through structure, measure and proportion.
After studying photography at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig from 1988 to 1992 under Prof. Arno Fischer, he received the Sächsische Zeitung Art Prize in 1992. A year later, in 1993, a scholarship from the Stiftung Kulturfonds Berlin (Berlin Cultural Foundation) enabled him to travel to Southeast Asia as part of the ‘CITYWALKS’ project, which had a lasting impact on his work. Since 1998, Nestler has regularly taken part in art-in-architecture competitions, and in 2001 another work scholarship took him to Cleveland, Ohio. His works are represented in numerous collections and have been shown in exhibitions in Germany and abroad since 1983. Using a clear, organising visual language, he explores the profound themes of time, transience and form in various media – from photography to art in public spaces.
